Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., opened its American headquarters in Hollywood, California, in 1957. The company sold 288 vehicles in 1958. By 1966, Toyota sold 20,000 vehicles in the United States. The company moved its U.S. headquarters to Torrance, California, in 1982. In 2008, the company was the largest-selling automaker in the United States and in the world.



Toyota granted a $10 million endowment to establish the Toyota USA Foundation in 1987. The foundation provides about $2 million each year to support educational programs focusing on mathematics and science for students from kindergarten through high school.
