How to Start a Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid provides an electric motor along with the gasoline engine to help improve fuel economy and the life of the engine. Starting a hybrid vehicle is slightly different from starting a standard engine vehicle and Toyota's Highlander Hybrid is no exception. It is important to ensure that the electric motor component of the vehicle is engaged and ready to operate before attempting to drive the vehicle.

     Check to make sure that you are carrying your remote entry keypad for your Highlander Hybrid. The vehicle detects a signal from it.

     Confirm that the gearshift selector is securely in the "Park" position. The Highlander Hybrid has a "system disable" that will prevent the vehicle from starting if it is in any other gear.

     Depress the brake pedal. While holding the pedal down, press and release the "Power" button on your Highlander's dashboard.

     Watch for "Ready" to light on the "Power" button. After the "Ready" light blinks, it will remain illuminated and a beep will sound. Once the beep sounds, the vehicle is ready to drive.
